Lean Manufacturing: A School Leavers Perception

Lean Manufacturing: A school leavers perspective
At the beginning of 2013 Futurestate Solutions introduced a new member to our team, a 16 year old school leaver, Tom. We’re giving him quite a long lead and just letting him get on with things in the office, i.e. managing social media, keeping the website up to date and helping to manage events. He needs a kick up the backside now and again but on the whole he is fitting in very well.

After just a few weeks on the job this is his perception of lean manufacturing, which I am sure you will agree is very impressive………
“My idea of lean manufacturing is that it’s a set of tools, a set of tools used to help eliminate waste but increase quality while production time and costs are also reduced. This can mean removing unnecessary steps to help reduce the time it takes for a product to be made, for example, if a worker has to walk a few meters to reach materials and this process takes 10 seconds that is 10 seconds wasted, if this process has to be done 100 times a day, that is a lot of minutes wasted, and minutes soon translate into hours.

One of the main benefits of implementing lean manufacturing in my opinion is that it saves money, if lean manufacturing is implemented properly then you should not be wasting any time, if you are wasting less time then you should be producing more. If you are not wasting any resources, you should be spending less money on resources.

A big principle of lean manufacturing is that by reducing waste, the final product is delivered to a customer with value; the advantage of this is that the customer is more pleased with their product, therefore building better customer relationships and customer loyalty.

Lean manufacturing can be hard to implement because it requires a lot of change, if someone in the organisation isn’t motivated to change, it will become very challenging to implement these changes.

I think lean manufacturing is a brilliant thing to implement into any business, because of the results it achieves, it may be hard to implement, but once done, it will change how the business thinks and operates for the better, it will save the business money, time and resources, which is also good for the environment.”

Well done Tom and keep up the good work.

Feel free to comment if you are as impressed as we are.
