The latest MAS Barometer stated that 84% of manufacturing company’s surveyed need to improve productivity in the next 6 months if they are to achieve their growth plans.

The latest Aerospace Report from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and BDO stated that more than 62% of aerospace engineers believe that their companies face productivity issues that threaten the UK’s position as a global aerospace superpower, resulting from an increasingly demanding and global aerospace market.

And yet in the last few months the UK Automotive industry has hit productivity figures of an all time high according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Although there is no one size fits all solution, there are a number of external factors contributing to this productivity puzzle.

  • The use of robots in UK manufacturing is not in line with the automotive industry or our European neighbours according to the International Federation of Robotics statistics:

o   Automotive Industry: 600 robots per 10,000 workers in the UK, compared to 1100 robots per 10,000 workers in                    Germany.
o   Other Manufacturing Industries: 27 (UK), 137 (Germany), 113 (Italy) per 10,000 workers.

  • The recent Budget announcement of the living wage increase to £7.20 per hour by April 2016 and £9 per hour by 2020 will not help UK manufacturers that are employing low skilled workers.
  • Although it is difficult to prove with statistics the 2008 financial crisis had a major impact on cash and resources for a lot of UK manufacturers, which affected their ability to invest in new machinery, equipment and developing staff.

In Lehman’s terms improving “productivity” means doing more with less; increasing the levels of efficiency of your people, machinery and systems.

We are experienced at improving productivity in the automotive industry as well as numerous other manufacturing sectors, such as, aerospace, electronics, furniture, food & drink, engineering, textiles and plastics. We have seen from working across multiple sectors, what works well, what doesn’t and what principles can be applied across multiple industries to help boost productivity.

To help UK manufacturers solve this productivity puzzle we are offering a free 1 day Manufacturing Review to 6 manufacturing businesses during the month of August 2015.

We are offering this Free Manufacturing Review on a first come first served basis and will provide a resource of 1-2 experienced Lean Consultants for a day to complete the review. This would be followed by a report to highlight key productivity improvement areas. It will also be a good opportunity for you to benchmark your operations against World Class Manufacturing and gain new ideas to improve productivity.
